External electric fuel pumps - what & where?

Please chime in let me know what brand/model you're using for external electric fuel pump, and where you mounted it. Thanks!

Re: External electric fuel pumps - what & where?

Strongly recommend not using any external fuel pumps. I can list quite a few reasons why but for now let me only ask what is stopping you from using a quality in-tank unit, sterile submerged & silent is the ideal

Aeromotive makes a 2,000run hour fuel pump 340LPH or something. I use for 10+ years at 600rwhp gasoline on 5/16" Hardline. Silent in-tank, It is less than buying a single tire.

What are you trying to accomplish? Electric fuel pumps don't suction fuel they need to be fed usually with gravity to keep them supplied.

Welcome fellow V4 owner.

I cannot recommend any external electrical pump. They are all garbage and if you read the reviews you will see all sorts of issues. If you are running a carb I would recommend an in tank pump maybe TBI with a return style FPR or possibly 1984 helper pump and mechanical secondary pump

I ran a sumped aluminum tank and an a1000 for years. Was it excessive? You bet. But it looked cool and I got it for a song. I've since removed it and went back to an intake pump. Too many problems with fitment, noise, baffling, it just wasn't doing it for me.

Re: External electric fuel pumps - what & where?

Your data says "Car: 1992 Teal RS Engine: 350 Carbed". If that is the case, my question is, have you dropped the tank and removed the factory fuel pump? If not, asking any pump to pump through it is mission impossible. As already mentioned, pumps push, they don't suck (much, anyway).

And, in order to get the in-tank electric out, you need to drop the tank. At that point, you might as well put in a good in-tank electric pump in the place of the factory pump.

Re: External electric fuel pumps - what & where?

I have never seen a single person happy with an external fuel pump. They're loud, lose their prime constantly, and burn out quick. The cars that came with factory fuel injection (your 92RS) have a great in-tank fuel pump set up that needs no improvement. anything else would be a massive downgrade.

Seeing as you're now carb'd, put a factory TBI pump back in the tank and run a return style regulator in the engine bay to feed your carb. There's plenty of posts on here with part numbers for fittings/regulators/lines/etc that will give you a clean and easy install.

Re: External electric fuel pumps - what & where?

Well, despite the noise, my old Holley Blue is still hanging in there.
Keeps a steady 5 PSI up against a return style regulator.
Originally an EFI V6, when I replaced the tank I ditched the pump and pickup. It was actually @five7kid who, about 15 years ago, sent me a carbureted pickup unit in exchange for mine. I said after the fact that I'll never drop the tank again as I find it's a PITA. The exhaust alone (being a single 3" aftermarket in the OEM location) would require cutting up to remove. Done once. Never again. If I DID go for an in-tank pump, I most certainly would cut an access panel into the hatch floor as many have done before (some nice kits out there).
The Blue pump was installed in the original EFI filter location. Pre-pump 100 micron filter and post pump 40 micron just before the carburetor.

That picture is a little dated. The lines have been cleaned up a little and that photo pre-dates and -6AN fuel return line.
I've a higher capacity radial style pump on the shelf that'll eventually replace old Blue. The noise kind of blends into the back ground but it wouldn't bother me any if it was gone. Besides, how long can one pump stay alive?

How about a link to these kits?

There are others too although this one floats to the top when the topic comes up.
Then there are knock offs.

Heh. I just removed that pickup and Walbro 255 last year for a new EFI pickup and a new pump for the 416 that is now in the '82. Same carb'd V6 tank that was originally fab'd and installed by the factory...

And I have run an external pump before - not in the 3rd gen, but in the shoebox back around 1977. I also ran one in the car from 2006 to 2010. It now has an in-tank pump from Tanks Inc.

If you do run an external electric pump, mount it back by the tank.

Yeah. In tank appears the way to go. But on the service side, not so much. One of my racing buddies seems to be changing pumps all too frequently. Some failures I think. Others, an upgrade. But the tank has to be dropped each time (he'd NEVER cut up a floor in any of his cars to accommodate an access panel although none of those are 3rd gens).

I thought the original EFI filter location a perfect spot for an external unit. Access is good. It's a little exposed but I'm rarely, if ever, on a road or in weather that would mess it up. So far (and it's been in service for a long time), so good.
