Last few questions about TBI--->carb swap
Last few questions about TBI--->carb swap
ok i heard i need to bypass the fuel pump relay...to do this do i just need to cut the relay out and splice wires in? can i do away with the entire wiring harness up front or should i leave it so the coolant temp sensor will still work or is there a way i can just leave that? when i get a HEI distributer were do i get the wiring harness to hook it up to? will mine work or do i need to pull something off a carbed chevy? what fuel pressure regulator should i get? i heard something about a molley (??) 3 port...does anybody know the parts number?
Don't know about bypassing the relay, mine is still there, pump runs fine. I wired my fan up direct with a switch because I don't like the temp. setting on the switch and I want more control at the track. White and pink wires on your current coil hook to the H.E.I. unit, white and pink I can't remember which is which just use a test light. I removed the stock pump because it couldn't pump enough fuel and I don't use a regulator on my electric pump. Good luck!!

I'm running a DEMON 750, and i'm still using the stock intank pump. To control the fuel pressure i'm using a 3 port Holley pressure regulator 1 line from tank, 1 to carb, 1 returns extra pressure back to tank. The pressure reg. Part # is 510-12-803 in my JEGS catalog and is $20.00. Hope that helps

Hey thanks for posting that, Slush. I, too am doing a TBI to carb swap and I thought that Mallory were the only ones who made a three-port regulator, and man is it expensive! Thanks for saving me 50 bucks!

By the way, Slush, what cam are you running? Berlinetta, I wanted to make TBI work, but my wiring harness was screwed up. I figured for an all-out speedmobile, my best choice was Holley 750 4160 sitting on top of a Street Dominator Dual Plane. Easier to tune, and more wealth of knowledge.

I'm running a Comp. 286h with 490 lift using 1.5 rockers. I'm in the process of installing my 1.6 Magnum rockers so my lift will be more like 525. The idle does get noticed but it won't rattle your fenders off
I just finished my swap. You need to by pass the fuel pump relay and run a constant hot to the pump and trigger it how ever you want. I also had a problem with the oil pressure sender becouse it ties into the fuel pump(89 gta) and it would not cycle the fuel pump long enough to fill the carb. The only thing I MUST RECOMMEND IS USE PIPE THREAD SEALENT ON ALL THE FUEL AND OIL FITTINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE FUEL WILL EAT IT UP AND LEAKS WILL BE EVERYWEAR. I used a non centerbolt motor and had to customize tons of **** since I received the car with no motor or trans. Now it has a carbed 355,th 350,2600 tci stall. weld pro-stars with skinnys(front) 275-50-15 nitto drags on the rear and i fuc*ing love it. I had a beautifull 96 formula( MODS EVERTHING INCLUNDING FLAMES) R.I.P

What if you keep the computer? Can you still use the same oil pressure sender and relay or do you still have to bypass it because of VATS? If I can get by with just keeping the ECM to control things like fuel pump, fan, Transmission, etc., I will probably go that route. How about your gauges? Or did you go all mechanical/aftermarket?
My computer is in my garage and the fuel pump is wired factory, it runs after oil pressure comes up. Get a PF1218 Delco oil filter and this process takes two turns of the engine. The VATS system has nothing to do with anything that you are playing with so forget it. It bothered me also, but I found out it was a non-player in this game. You can't use the computer to control anything really after the sensors are all unplugged. All of your gauges will still work without the ECM, even the speedo. Good luck with your swap, its not really as hard as it seems just takes some time.
Yes the computer goes dead and mine controlls NOTHING (found out the hard way) I hard wired the fuel pump, ran the factory fans with an aftermarket fan switch probe( dont relly like it but it works). The A/C stuff all works along with the all the dash items. Youll have to hook up the oil pressure sender(dash) the water sensor on the head(dash) run a wire from the neg side if your coil or cap if using HEI in cap coil to run the tack(dash) the volts work fine with alterations. you will also need to run a triggerd hot to the HEI depending waht kind of ignition you have. REMEMBER MY CAR HAD NOTHING BUT WIRES IN THE ENGINE BAY WHEN I GOT IT(no motor or trans) so I had to trace all the da*n wires from a diagram..... not FUN at ALL. not to mention my motor set up is pre 86 stuff but I did run the 89 serpintine set up(very lucky it all was laying iin the trunk.. have fun and take your time. Its all worth it in the long run.
Shift points are controlled by the governor in the tranny I believe; not the computer. I have no ECM controlling mine and it shifts fine; the only thing the ECM DOES control is the TC lockup - and if you want that you can buy a kit to convert it to non-comp controlled.

Hey slush Im running the same cam but your wrong on your lift, its 465@ .50 duriation is adv. 286. Im running 1.6 rockers now and the idle kicks a$$.Its a rough cam @ idle but drivablity is great with it. I also use a holly 750 duel feed double pumper to feed the beast. Elderbrock carbs are great out of the box for a daily driver but for all out tuning you cant beat a good ol' HOLLY.
