do I need a new carb?

Well, I'm sure I do, I thinks its still the original carb and as far as I know its never been rebuilt. I am asking this because I need to know where to get a cc-quadrajet. I know jet refurbishes them. Any one else? How much should it cost? Do they make one thats a little more performance oriented than stock? My choke isn't working and it idles rough, so I think its about time for a new one. Also, has anyone heard of vaccum leaks through the carb. I keep getting a code 53 ( low egr vaccum. something like that) and I'm wondering if my vaccum loss could be coming from the carb? thanks for any help!

Where I work we sell rebuilt Quadrajets done by Holley for $350. A cheap fix would be to get a rebuild kit and take it to a mechanic, kit is $30, labor probably $100.

Vacuum leak through the carb itself means it's time for some new gaskets!

Auto Bone sells CC-Q-Jets reman'd by Holley, that's where I got mine. Paid about $240 for it. I don't particularly care for "The Zone", but in this case it worked for me.
BUT, examine the carb VERY, VERY carefully. If you see anything that looks bogus, ask for another one. Chances are you'll need to do some dialing-in on it if you decide to go with this unit, sometimes they're not calibrated very well. Like, on my second one, the torx screws were tightened too tight and bent the top of the carb body ever so slightly into the secondary doors, getting them hung up.
Other than the Jet reman'd CC-Q-Jet, I don't know of anyone else who does these particular carbs.

Most gaskets in a carb end up spewing fuel and not sucking air (which is rather unfortunate unless you like fires). Both of those problems plus the code are probably the result of a leak in one of your vaccum hoses which no doubt has fallen apart in the ages since the car was new. I suggest replacing all vaccum lines first (you should do this even if you went with a new carb, so no lost money, right?).
