Call me "Old School"... but, there is no comparison. If I were looking for another vert (which I am) I would not even consider the first pic. Looks like it has been modded and who knows what else. Eventhough, it only the wheels that can easily be changed. The original, "unmolested" look just has something about it.

Re: Your Convertibles

Stauf, if you're looking for a 'vert, I'm thinking of selling. I'm on Long Island. Original owner, no longer stock mechanically (8,000 miles on mildly modded 350, trans, suspension, interior, paint), but other than hood (easily changed) it's basically stock appearing. All work professionally done. Won't be offended if you're not interested; I'm not sure I want to let it go anyway. I've only owned it 24 years.

Re: Your Convertibles

Figured I would post up our 91 Firebird Convertible. We got this car twelve years ago and she spent the last 6 years off the road. It is my wife's car and when she got pregnant the fuel pump went out and the car was put up. Finally this winter we started freshening it up and getting it back in shape.

It is powered by a LO3 and has an Accel 300+ ignition box & coil and a open element air cleaner. Would like to eventually get about 250hp out of it. I know it's not a lot but this car is a back road cruiser so no need for 500hp.

Over the winter we put in a new radiator, master cylinder, all new belts/hoses/plugs/wires/fluids/tune up stuffs, new bushings, shocks and struts + strut mounts. We upgraded the springs to a set of Vogtland Performance Springs. Added a set of Spohn lower control arms with Founders bolt in LCA relocation brackets. Also added a Spohn panhard bar. The rear is a 10 bolt with 3.42 gears with discs. Also upgraded the fuel pump so it will be ready for any possible future power upgrades. Swapped the steering wheel for a non-airbag 88 Formula wheel and swapped the dash out for a 89 GTA dash with the 140mph speedo. It sits on GTA wheels with Kumho AST tires. This car is a blast to drive. Throw it into a turn and it will stick to the road like glue. Still though there is more I want to do to the suspension. I want to add a set of WS6 (or better) sway bars, sub frame connectors, wonder bar, strut tower brace, brake upgrade, and a roll bar. Also she will need a new top by next summer.

It is not the most powerful or perfect car out there but it is a blast to drive and enjoy. In the end isn't that what it is all about anyways?

Since these pics have been taken I have put the front air dam back on and painted the spoiler and deck lid the other day.

Hello - I am new to the website and I bought my first 3rd gen last month. This low mileage (43K), one owner 88 ragtop replaced my 88 Fiero Formula and I am happy with the upgrade!

Nice! That is exactly what I have as well. 1988 Iroc Z convertible in Bright Red. It is my daily driver and runs great with no problems...very reliable. I am a maintenance horse and have had my 88 going on ten years now and it is still just a joy to drive. Enjoy your new car!

Re: Your Convertibles

Neat... I was wondering if there was any stickers or badges in the door jam that might tell you who converted it...

There were so many companies out there making them, this is the first 91 or 92 conversion I have seen... The latest conversion up to this point was a 1989 GTA that was done by Matrix3 or Hi-line...

Edit 1: Here is what I found, I believe it is a "Coach Conversions" convertible... Top looks exactly like another one I have pictures of..

Edit 2: Also looks a lot like Hi-Line as well... I think I am going to stick with my first one for now...

Straman looks similar but the buttons are different...

Hi John, thanks for the great info. I was told that there was a 91 Firehawk out there that was also converted. Obviously not many Formulas were converted 91-92. If anyone has more information, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Firehawk #27 was the last 1992 Firehawk made... it was originally Dealer stock as a Trans Am Convertible, they sent the car to SLP to be converted into a Firehawk...

There are no 91-92 FORMULA Firehawk convertibles...

I believe I ran across your car a few months back on something, autotrader, cars.com, craigslist, ebay, cargurus or something...

I believe it might be the only one....

A friend contacted me about the car, and I ended up buying it.
So this might be 1 of 1? Wonder how that will fare in the future?

It seems that the ASC (Factory) & Autoform convertibles seem to fare the best for resale.. it is hard to say...

That car was built for noted Pontiac Collector Milt Robson with cooperation from Jim Mattison of PHS fame. The pictures you posted were taken when it was in Milt's barn in Georgia and then in the work garage out back. It has since changed hands I believe.

Here is my 1991 Z/28 Convertible. Its a nice lower mileage car 83,000 KMS (51,500 MILES). Not much has been messed with other than the stereo, still has its original exhaust system.

'89 IROC-Z, LB9 305, 60,000 miles. I am the second owner. Found it at a dealership. It had been sitting for most of it's life. Had 32,637 miles when I bought it. Tires the car still has are from 2004. Lol.

Re: Your Convertibles

Recently visited my trusty black car 5 states away where its been stashed in a little shed for several years. Yes, I feel a little bad about letting it waste away. Just might go get it next spring. One of my all time faves. Just wish it had more power and a better trans. It's LB9/T5. Maybe the motor will be locked up and I can get something better.

Re: Your Convertibles

this is my 88 triple black. 1 repaint. 109000 klms now . just pulling the tranny for a rebuild. might freshen up motor, while apart. Been stalling as not sure what to do with it . Will probably leave it stock. Once you step up the HP, then you have step up everything lol. Love the site, especially for the 3rd gen drop tops.

Re: Your Convertibles

A couple pics of the 87 iroc convertible I bought a few months ago.

53,000 Miles
305 TPI 5 speed
No accidents

I had a 92 trans am convertible 305tpi 5 speed about 10 years ago that I wish I never sold... so when this came up it seemed like a decent replacement.

Very nice car. Very clean.

Heres the latest pic of mine . Just did the front brakes in this pic. It has 88000 on it i still consider that rather low milage for a car this old

Re: Your Convertibles

88,000 is still low..

I had an 87 TPI 305 with 140,000 miles and it still ran and drove like new. I kept it in showroom condition and was meticulous about maintenance.

Those Vette wheels look great on there.. Nice ride!

These cars can get rust bubbles after time and need exterior upkeep and the interior and plastic parts can need replacement/upkeep.. But they are pretty easy to maintain/work on mechanically and pretty reliable cars..

88,000 miles is nothing..
