Hi,
I had mine repainted a few years back and it was no where to be found.
So they taped that area off on mine and added 5 coats of clear coat in that area. Why? So I could wet sand it out if it get's scuffed.
Another guy in town had a vert done recently... and they did not do it on his paint. His looks like mine except flat. There is a rim on both our cars where the rubber meets the paint.... but who cares? The plastic will only turn milky or crack after a few years.
Just keep up with the rubber and you'll be fine.
And it only gives you more reason to drive with the top down.

I have heard of people using 3m clear tape that is used to protect your lower portions of paint from rock chips. The only problem is it will have to be cut to fit, and it doesn't look easy.

Side note....
The 3M tape would work, but would be hard to cut to form and get air bubbles out. I put a good carnuba wax on my car in that area and it did not leave a ring.
When there is only paint in that area.... it does scuff a tiny bit, but waxing brings it out again. It's just a little more maintenance.

the paint guy said he coult put something similar to what you said, but it would have to small seams at the corners so it will lay flat. i might just have him put 2 more layers of clear coat on there so i can just buff/sand it out when need be

It's kinda tough to see but maybe this gives you an idea.
Note the little black ring around the area... that's where the rubber meets the paint. My rubber is original to the car which dates back to 91. I hear you can get new rubber for this part which may eliminate the problem.
They taped the area off and then laid down an additional 3 coats of clear... the whole car has two coats of clear. Giving it 5 coats total in that area. Then sanded the edge to blend a bit more.
