1992 z28 convertible 144k miles and some questions

I am looking at picking up a 1992 z28 convertible with 144k miles. What are some areas other than rust i need to be aware of? How many miles do the transmissions last before they need rebuilding (of course driving style varies), the top looks like its in good shape, carpet looks like a dog knawed on it, and the front grey leather seats are cracked.

Paints in great shape, no rust, whats a fair price to pay?

Thanks so much.

Re: 1992 z28 convertible 144k miles and some questions

well i bought my 1991 trans am covertible for 2500... it has small rust spots in the normal places... needs a convertible top window..

and i busted a brake line last week... my car has 144k on it and its still running like a champ... no lights on in the dash... no funny sounds... no knocks.. shifts great... and carpet is nothing to replace

but check the floors for stains... rust stains to be exact... even if the floors dont look rotted bring a screw driver with you and poke around at the floors... dont be gentle you need to know if this thing needs some bad floor work... but even if it does need the floors replaced these cars are classics and very very rare now a days...

heres a list of what to check for

strut tower rot.
floor rot
soft floors
hole in the spare tire area (common dont worry have one in mine too)
check the top for leaks
start the car up and have someone stand behind it to see if black or blue smoke comes out

black= running rich
blue= piston rings or valve seals/guides
white= bad head gasket and possible cracked head
blueish white antifreeze getting into the combustion chamber

take the car for a ride and get down on it... dont be afraid you need to know if this car is running right... along with shifting right... check EVERYTHING! wipers, lights, A/C,Heat, turn signals, gauges, watch the temature gauge closely, along with the voltage if it doesnt charge alittle over 13 your going to need a new altinator within the next few months... or it will keep killing your batterys...

make sure no plastics for the int are cracked. check the rear seat belts.. along with the front... make sure the mirrors work, the windows... trunk pop(if it has one) make sure all keys work for all doors and trunk.. make sure hood shocks are good...(if not cheap fix)

ive had 3 3rd gens

a 1984 camaro sport coupe built 350/350

a 1988 camaro sport coupe w/ground fx from factory built 73 vette motor 400hp 425tq

and a 1991 pontiac trans am ws6 stock everything!

these cars are very fun to drive... when you hit that pedal to the floor and you have that top down it will put such a smile on your face its unreal...

but id say a good price to pay is a max of 3000$ thats if it needs some floor work and that spare tire area needing work.. if none is needed a get in a drive to a car show car.... 4000$ but offer 2500$ and work something out with them right there... any problems pm me for my phone number and call me while your checking it out and ill let you know...

Re: 1992 z28 convertible 144k miles and some questions

So how long does it take an average person to put a new top on it. I have read about the tops, but to install it how long does it take or if you buy one how much did it cost to install it. Is it hard to install?

THanks Matt
