Z Overheating

Ok I'm stumped right now. Yesterday while driving on the freeway my car started to make a ticking sound especially when tryin to accelerate. I got off the freeway and went to a gas station. My car was smoking and antifreeze was leaking out. I let the car cool down and checked fluids. Virtually no oil and most if not all the antifreeze leaked out. Couldn't find any leaks in any hoses however. I refilled everything and was driving home. It was ok for awhile then it got really bad. The ticking sound got worse and the car shut down on me. After parking the antifreeze I put in had leaked out again. My temp guage hasn't worked since I had the car but I've never had a problem before. Also this engine was just put in my car about 2 weeks ago. Sorry for the long post. Not sure if it should be on this board or not. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated:hail:

I would be worried about the no oil thing, thats a serious problem. Your cooling system could be tip top, but with no oil...it wont do any good.

As far as a cooling problem goes, check the usual stuff...thermostat, is the fan running?, can you see water flowing with the rad cap off, belt tight at the pump, any leaks, lower hose collapsing...etc etc.

Check for oil leaks!!!

it appears I had a very small oil leak. Thing was I had been checking that and it wasn't serious. The fan has been rigged to stay on when the key is in the on position. By the time it started doing it there wasn't enough in the rad for me to see anything swirling. a lot had splashed around on the engine. There's a leak coming from the overfill reservoir too. That's new hence I never had a problem with that before. I'll check thermostat and water pump when I get off work. Good thing is I have a brand new aluminum water pump waiting to go on

Hopefully no real damage has been done

Thanx for the help:hail:

i would replace the water pump, maybe even with an electronic one. but before that replace the radiator cap. theres also a radiator cap testing pump/gauge, not sure how much it cost but it can test to see if your cap is holding presure and also you can reverse it and hook it up to your radiator and see if theres any leaks.
I would first replace the cap and the hoses. also the seal on the thermostat.

as for the oil? do you check it ever week or so to see if its low? if you do, then it must be a bad leak or you would of noticed that i was low.

Yeah I do check it every week just to make sure. Hmmmm ok I'll check/replace the rad cap. Can't wait to get off work so I can get to work on my car. Terrible not having it up and running with this weather . If the leak got like that in one day that something happened while driving to make it that bad

Well I took a good look at my car when I got home. I found the problem. My rad is cracked. There's a leak near the rad cap and once pressure builds is squirts out. Now on to look for a new rad unless someone has a better idea

well if its an all metal rad...you could probably have it welded...if its the stock rad with those silly plastic tanks...toss it you can get a better one aftermarket for less $

Well I paid like $160 for an all metal 3 core rad....I thinkt he stock rad comes from GM at around $200 bucks...and if you go aluminum it will be more. Shop around, see what you can get local If your budget is tight, check local radiator shops, they sometimes will have used/reconditioned ones for decent. Just stay away from the plastic ones.
