re-route the heater hoses into a tradional style without affecting the reverse cooling of the intake. This is on an 89 Formula 350. I am trying to "clean up" the engine compartment and simplify things.

Should I splice a shut-off valve in the hoses to keep heat out during the summer? It's hot in Texas....

Yes, you could route the heater hoses in the traditional way but, like you said the interior will be hotter in the summer unless you splice in a shut off valve.

 

Oil Cooler. If I shut off flow to the cars' interior, then I have the problem of a non-functioning Oil cooler. I am guessing that I'll splice a diverter valve in there next. So far the AC can keep up with the load, but it hasn't hit 100 degrees yet.

No regrets though. Already it neater under the hood and everything is a whole lot more accessible.

 

Just a friendly jester. You don't have reverse flow cooling. Since you have a serpentine belt, you have a reverse rotation water pump. This simply means that it rotates reverse of the crankshaft. The 'V'-belt pulley water pumps rotate the same way as the crankshaft.

The reverse flow cooling system was available on the LT1's (and similar motors). It flowed coolant from the radiator to the heads first, then to the block. This allowed them to run the desired comp. ratio they wanted and allow the engine to run on 87 octane fuel.

Your water pump still pumps the water from the radiator to the block first, they just had to change the way the water pump spins so it'd work with the serpentine belt setup.

2/3 of the junk pulled off of the top of the motor. It sure is "clean" under the hood now, and a heck of a lot easier to work on.

I had planned to do some TPI mods/improvements, but I wanted to simplify things first. I am an old Hot Rodder (51) who is totally unrepentant. Our kids have graduated from college, and we will have $$ again. Now I can "play"!!!

 

i did this mod too. could never see the passenger valve cover before i did that. air stuff in the way too, but those are gone now also.
