Cooling down a SB with style
Cooling down a SB with style
When I first built my 350, everyone told me to convert to electric fan, water pump and run a 4 core radiator. Well, I dont like the looks of an electric fan, so I got an alluminum 3 core, 16" flexilite fan, and a summit mechanical water pump. Maybe it's JUST my setup, but I drove my car to Dallas last week (2 1/2 hr drive) and she ran cool as can be. To all the non-believers in the mechanical ways, you can keep cool and still have style.

On the freeway is when the engine will most likely Not run hot as that is when the engine gets the most airflow. It's when you get in 100* weather and you're in stop and go traffic that your mechanical fan will show its drawbacks. Mechanical fans flow the most air at freeway speeds but, in traffic they flow the least since they operate with the engine rpm. If all your driving is on the freeway you won't have any problems with the Mechanical fan but, if you ever get stuck in a traffic jam on a 100* day you'll wish you had a Dual Electric Fan Setup.

I run my flex fan around town all day with it getting hot. Sure the engine rpm is much lower around town, making the fan spin slower--but look at the pitch of a flex fan at low rpms.
