180 Degree Thermo

I currently have a 195 degree thermo in my '89 camaro 5.7L TPI. If I want to change it out for a 180 degree thermo, will I need to change the computer for this change too? I wasn't going to do this thermo swap util I put the hypertech chip in so will the chip componsate for the 180 degree thermo by itself? And what about the electric cooling fans, will they automatically be adjusted for the change in temp? Thanks -89IRO

No, you won't have to do anything but change the stat. Fan control will remain as is. That is a function of ECM programming for the primary fan, secondary fan uses a fan switch in the engine block. I too have an 89 5.7 camaro and my experience has been that it lost fuel economy, but I am in eastern PA where the temps go up and down. Yuor average temp out there and depending on driving conditions you should be OK with a 180. The ECM will relearn fuel delivery without any modified chip.

180 thermo

Yeah, cause I was going to put in the 180 thermo when I was ready to put in the hypertech chip, so will the chip affect the fans turning on? And when you say it may lean it out, the computer will automatically adjust to this change , even with the high performance chip? Thanks. -89IRO

Don't think the fan cycling will be changed but I am not that familiar with Hypertech. It should state if it does or doesn't. With a 180 the ECM should not have a problem because your average temp will be very close to the target range the engine wants anyway. Personally, I think these chips are a waste of money. I have tried them over the years and all they seem to do is advance the timing more aggressively hence requiring you run premium all the time.

O.K. thanks for the help. So you don't think I should waste my money on a chip? The hypertech is pretty much the same thing as the JET chip in the same application.

instead of a chip just install a cooler fan switch so the passengers fan comes on around 200 and off 185. instead of the factory fan switch which turns that fan on at around 237!!

and your drivers fan will be used as backup, it turns on like 227..

Good point, but still get a 180* but it won't do good without a lower temp rating switch for the fans.
