Part number for '86 305 temp gauge transducer/sending unit

Hi all,

I have an '86 Z-28 305 manual/carbureted for which I need to track down the exact water temperature sending transducer (or sending unit) GM part number.

A Chevy dealer installed a simple sending unit (not a transducer), which appears to work with an "idiot light" as opposed to the gauge in my car. The gauge reads about 1/8" above the lowest tick mark (100 degrees) after hours of operation on the highway. It's gotten close to the middle mark (160 deg.) once or twice, but drops back down in a few minutes of driving.

Thanks for any and all help!

Any GM dealer should be able to give you the part# and price. Make sure you have the VIN number handy, sometimes they need it for parts accuracy. It's not a transducer, it's a thermistor encased in a brass fitting.

Thanks for the reply, Danno! The unit that's currently installed was put in by a Chevy dealer. I can't be too hard on them, though. I went to the "Alternative Catalog" on GMPartsDirect.com and searched for a "water temp sender or switch" for an '86 Camaro, and there was no unit shown for a gauge-equipped V8. The closest part number was shown for the V6, and it's 25037346.

That same part number appears for earlier and later years without being tied to a particular engine. That makes me believe it might be the right one, particularly since it was shown for use with a gauge rather than a light, no engine specified, for 1983 and '84.

The part number of the unit installed by the Chevy dealer is 8993146. They thought there might have been a parts number change at some point, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.

In any case, it's useful to me to know from your post that it's a thermistor encased in a brass fitting. Thank you for the response!
