Yay! The fan works....I think?

Well my fan actually has worked all along since I rewired it per the original '86 wiring diagrams. I just had to wait longer 'till it got hot enough. That's the new problem, though. In my '86 shop manual it says it should come on around 220° or so. Problem is, my fan doesn't turn on until it gets to the white line just before the redline on the coolant temp gauge. I assume that white line represents 240°? The fan then remains on until it gets down to 220°, then shuts off. Now I've heard a lot of things...one that the temp gauge could be off...and it's really turning on/off at the proper temps. I've also heard you can go buy another chip or something or other that will let the fan turn on at a lower temp than it is. I've ALSO heard that the coolant temp sensor could be dirty and therefore "thinking" it's at a lower temp. What do you think? It doesn't bother me much as long as letting the car run up to that temp doesn't hurt anything. Does it?
