Cooling problem

Ok to start off the car runs normal temp when moving, but when standing still in traffic it heats up FAST. What could be the problem, I am leaning towards fans not working or thermostat. Its an 88 vert 305/auto

Does it ever redline? I know in both z's that have, they do the same thing. While the car just sits, there's no moving air flowing under the hood other than what the fan can push, and depending on temperatures outside, that may not be enough. I rewired the fans to run all the time, and that helps a little too. You may give that a try.

sounds like fan to me. when the car is starting to run hot, pop the hood and check to see if the fan is working.

My guess is the fans are not coming on. When the car moves enough air is moving across the radiator to give some cooling, but not enough. Check it out.
