Overheating in traffic

My '92 formula 305 is overheating when I slow down and get into traffic. On the hiway it is fine, running around 160-170. I noticed that the main fan never comes on, even during the code checking procedure. The only way I can keep my car from getting too hot is to turn on the A/C, and that sometimes isn't enough in Texas. Where is the relay located for the main fan? The wiring diagram doesn't show it's location. Thanks in advance.

has the water pump been replaced?
check for a whining noise. my old rs did this. it ran fine on the freeway, b/c there was plenty of air, but around town, i had to run the a/c to keep it cool (and keep the fan on)
after i replaced it, it was fine

Well it hasn't been replaced since I have owned it.. about a year. It does make a slight mechanical whine, much like the sound a BMW 6cyl makes. I assumed it was the sound of the serpentine belt setup. But I know for a fact that the fan doesn't come on, so there's at least that problem, I just don't know which relay it is.

does yours have a dual fan setup or single?

does the a/c on cause the fan to run, or is it still off?

i wish i knew the site, but you can buy your cars factory service manual for about $60 i believe. i'll have to look over my notes from asep school to find it. if i do, i'll let you know
this book will have step by step of where and what to check, plus it will be invaluable for later repairs

Well I've made some progress. It does have the dual fans. I jumped the relay and the fan came on so at least I know it works and the wires to it are decent. It must be the sender to turn it on, or possibly some of the fusible links that are in the circuit. If you find that source for the manual I'd really appreciate it. The A/C fan works as it is supposed to. Now...when retrieving codes are both fans supposed to be on?

another option is to use your own adjustable fan controller like one of these from Autozone.
