Is this right?
Hellow all.. first off let me say great board!!
now to my question..
My girlfriend has a third gen, but its a chopped car. Its beautiful with a 6K paint job, but the origin of engine is a little suspect. The front half is an 82, and the back is an 86 and the entire drivetrain we were told came out of an IROC.
It is a TPI 305 auto w/air conditioning(not working) and a single fan, and perimeter bolts for the valve covers.
the problem we have is once the engine reaches 225 at idle, and the fan kicks on, it fails to slow the heating of the engine... it will continue until redline. the thermostat, and water pump have both been replaced.
Is the fan too small for the motor or should I just get a lower temp switch?
Thanks for any input...

Is it ok when driving it? If so make sure the fan is wired correctly. The fan is a puller, meaning it draws air from the front of the car thru the radiator. If it's been modified maybe someone wired it backwards. What about the fan, is it also a different one? More info would help.

It is normal for these cars to run at about 220-230, but not much higher. Certainly not redlining the guage.
Are you using the stock guage? It may have been tampered with if the car has been worked on a lot like you suggest...

yes, the car is fine at highway speeds, doesnt get over 180 or so.... the fan motor has been replaced at least once by me, and is pulling correctly... it is the stock guage, but it seems pretty accurate, cause when it gets hot on the guage, the anti-freeze starts to boil...

Does the water actually flow through the pipes (check that all the pipes to/from the radiator get hot. Reason for asking is that you may have a clogged system. You may need to flush the system to try and get rid of any problem. If the water system has boiled over in the past then rust particles can clog up the radiator etc causing low water movement.
Secondly, and perhaps more likely is that if I understand it the TPI engine should have 2 fans, one that runs permanently, and one that is switched. My HO 305 has just a single (but much bigger) fan that is switched. Someone with a TPI may well correct me.....
Good luck,
Si.
