Fan always on

I just got an '87 base-model FIrebird, lil' 2.8 motor, and the guys before me rigged the fan so it comes on whenever the ignition is turned to 'RUN'. I can only imagine that the fan is not liking being on all the time, has anyoen burned out their fan motor by doing this? If so, I'll go ahead and rip out their crudly-applied wiring job and rig a fan switch instead. But, they were nice enough to rig a temp gage, the car didn't come with one from the factory.
