406 Overheating...

My 406 will just keep getting hotter and hotter while idling. While driving (at freeway speeds), and when its not 110 out like it was today, the temp evens out at around 180 or 190. If I'm in stop and go traffic though, the temp shoots to the moon. The thermostat appears to be working correctly, the radiator cap appears to be holding pressure (it is one of those caps with the pressure release lever on it). I've got a Stewart Stage 2 Aluminum water pump, 31x19 Dual 1" core aluminum radiator, and a bottle of Pro-Blend "40 Below" coolant additive, and dual fans wired to a manual switch (running all the time). I have a tranny cooler and my AC condensor in front of the radiator. Any suggestions? I'm running Pro Topline 200cc aluminum heads with steam holes drilled. The car still needs tuning, but the base timing appears to be set ok, and I dont seem to be running lean. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are your "dual fans" stock or aftermarket? You seem to have a lack of good airflow sitting still, stock fans slow as they age loosing their ability to pull the required amount of air. You may try replacing the fan motors or better yet swap to dual Spal 11" high performance fans. Spal are the best there is and will set you back $239 for the dual 11" versions. They pull HUGE amounts of air.

I have stock dual fans mounted using some brackets that a buddy and I made up. I think the fans are spaced out from the radiator a little too much, do you think moving the fans closer could make a drastic improvement? They are approx 1" away from the radiator right now, maybe 1.5". How close are they witht he stock radiator and brackets?

John,

How much power do these fans use, more than the stock ones? I seem to remember reading that the stockers drew about 40 amps each?

Thanks
