Wierdo Fan Problem

I have a theory, but I'd like to hear some opinions from you guys since I've noticed alot of you really know your stuff, and I don't.

When I bought my car (92 RS, 3.1, 5 spd) the fan didn't work. I messed around with the wires under it to see if they all looked to be in good order, and they are.

I jumped the diagnostic terminal to try and help out with a different problem I had on the car a couple days ago, and VOILA, the fan was running!

I figure when I jumped the diagnostic that it went through a systems check, one of them being the fan, correct?

So, all is in good mechanical order I'm thinking, it must be the coolant temp sensor.

Well later that day I cruise over to my parent in laws house, I run inside, and sit there for about five minutes when all of a sudden I remember I left my car on. I run outside, go to turn it off, check the temp gauge and it is JUST starting to hit the red. Right as I was about to turn it off the fan turned on and cooled it down.

The fan hasn't worked since, I let it heat up to pretty hot (I didn't have the heart to let it hit red though) and still no fan.

Temp sensor? Maybe just a wierdo wire that isn't getting good connection?

When I jump the terminals, the fan comes on everytime though... Telling me all is in good working order... I don't throw any lights though, only code 12 like it's supposed to.
