I need some help with my fan

hey guys,

I'm 15 years old, and I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 that I purchased for 1,000$. It has 84,000 miles and needs paint bad. I am working on this car with my dad and I am in hopes of making this a nice car. I just got the car at my house and i needed to move it to make space. After i shut it off i noticed that the fan was still going even after the key wasn't in ignition, and it does this for about 15 or 20 seconds and makes a quiet vibrating sound. Why is the fan still going after the engine is off? has this happened to anybody else?

Thanks alot, Randy

I normally don't reply when I don't know for sure but I will tell you what I have observed. I have an 89 Camaro TPI 305. The fan on my car stops when the engine shuts off. I have pulled the relay ( passenger side between the battery and radiator) and measure the pins on the socket. The larger red wire is hot all the time. the large black wire is the one going to the fan and gets 12v when the relay closes. The coil wires are the two smaller wires. One side of the coil gets 12v when I start my car and the other is supposed to be grounded to turn the fan on- this is done by the computer and it reads the temp from a 2 wire sensor on the front of the intake below where the upper radiator hose attaches. ok. you see the fan can't stay on BUT you have a firebird and you need a manual! also it may be modified by a previous owner. Any ways be glad it is cooling . Beside many late model cars leave the fan running until it cools off and does no harm.

I'm hoping to ground the wire section that lets both fans run while the key is in. I had something similar as described above with my Cadillac, but thinking back, I think it may have been the air shock compressor vs. the cooling fans. Mine are not working and the relays can be expensive, as I've priced mine thus far
Possibly try a junk yard, I'd imagine, for spares
