Warmer than I like with A/C and sitting still
Warmer than I like with A/C and sitting still
First,,,it's an 88 Iroc 350 with dual fans, car has 60,000 miles. Cooling system works fine, fans work fine, all like they should. My little gripe is when sitting still with the air on the temp gradually climbs after about 10 minutes or so, with a scan tool it shows it is getting up to 235 degrees, and probably beyond, once at that point I turn the air off, and the fans have no problem bringing the temp back down to normal. I am running a 170 thermostat and have a Jet fan switch on the secondary fan to come on at 185, the other fan is still controlled by the stock computer chip.
When cruising down the road with A/C on the car runs as cool as can be, just above the thermostsat opening point, everything is good, but if I sit still for about 10 minutes or more, the temp slowly climbs, once moving and getting some air flow, everything cools back to normal. I can also just simply turn the air off while sitting still and the fans begin to pull the temp down also.
This leads me to believe that the stock fans just don't pull enough CFM to keep things cool with the A/C on and sitting still, the car simply needs more airflow accross the radiator,,,,so here is my question. Is there a pair of bigger fans that will fit nicely without modding or cutting anything, something that will pull more CFM? I really don't want to hack the wiring harness and I also don't want to cut and butcher any of the plastic shrouding etc...to make a pair of aftermarket fans work. I was wondering if anyone has experimented with bigger fans? I have done some searching and looked at all the stickies but nothing really applied to what I am after. Thanks for any insight and/or ideas, Larry.

That's pretty normal on a hot day with AC running and high outside temp. Be Cool makes aftermarket fans, don't know what the CFM rating is. You also may want to consider a rad with more rows. You can also try a low ratio, instead of 50% coolant and 50% water try 30% coolant and 70% water, or maybe a wetting agent like water wetter by Red Line.

Thanks Danno, I figured it was normal since everything is up to snuff and working. I may look into the aftermarket fan route if I can find something that pulls more cfm. That would help tremendously since the temp only creeps when sitting still with A/C running. I was thinking about a nice aluminum radiator, but I figured Be Cool did not make one specifically for our applications. Usually they want to sell you a universal fit and you have to trim and modify to get it in there, thats something I don't want to do. If you know of a 4 core copper or a nice aluminum radiator that is a drop in with no cutting required I am definately interested. Just that alone with the stock fans would probably do the trick. Thanks again

You have to understand that sitting still will hurt A/C performance no matter what fan(s) you have. Even driving at 25mph puts more cfms through your a/c coils than even the best dual electrics can. I am not saying you can't improve it with fans, but it won't be up to what it pumps out at speed.

Sorry man, maybe I didn't explain it clearly, it's not the A/C temp I am worried about, it blows nice and cold. It's the engine temps when I sit still and the A/C is on. I can sit still without the A/C on and the engine is cool, just seems that running the A/C while sitting still is a little too much for those stock dual fans, they don't pull enough CFM while sitting still to keep the engine cool. As soon as I start moving and bringing more air across the front,,,,the engine cools right down. Keep in mind, I have to sit still for about 10 minutes or more when it is 95+ degrees outside, then the engine temp will slowly creep to about 235 on the scan tool before I turn the A/C off, I am not interested in seeing if it goes any higher, but once the A/C is turned off the fans can pull the temp right back down in a few minutes while sitting still, when moving the engine will run around 175 to 190 at the most with the A/C running, but the car has to be moving for air flow, this is leading me to believe the stock dual fans just don't pull alot of cfm, I am looking into bigger fans, something that will go in without butchering the wire harness or any of the stock shrouding. I can get the stock style fan plugs from GM and splice them into the new fans no problem, then it will be a plug in type deal so I don't have to cut any wiring on the car, it's alot of extra work but it's the way I like things done. I just have to find a pair of fans that will fit nicely and do the job. I would also like to go with a nice radiator but all the guys on here seem to have to modify the car in some way to get them to fit, not something I want to do either. I wouldn't care if the radiator cost 6-700 bucks as long as it was a bolt in deal, I don't want to have to hack the car and make brackets etc...You would think with all these 3rd gens running around that someone would make a nice 4 core or aluminum radiator that is a drop in deal....I will do some more searching and see what I can come up with. It's not an emergency, just a little something that bothers me when the wife wants to run in the store and I am waiting with the A/C blowing. Thanks for the help so far guys, if I come up with anything I will post it. Larry.
