Hi,

I have a 1987 camaro RS, V-06 2.8 liter. My cooling fan stopped working the other day. Before I noticed that it went out, I smelled a electrical burning smell coming from the engine compartment. I looked on the left hand side of the radiator and noticed that a red wire had burn itself through. I took the Camaro to a auto electric shop and they diagnosed that a plastic bag had innertwined itself on to the fan motor and caused the fusible link to blow. They fixed the problem, so I thought. The next day the electrical buring smell came back and I noticed the cooling fan stopped working and the same wire had fried through again. Before I take it back to the shop on Monday does anyone have any ideas?

I'd guess the fan motor has fried it's windings, almost a dead short maybe. Or a wire is touching a grounded metal piece somewhere in the circuit. They should be able to easily diagnose this one way or the other.

Yeah, if you lock up the motor, then apply power, it will certainly overheat. You probably fried the fan motor. Head to the JY and get a replacement. You probably should replace the fan relay as well. In addition to the burned wire.

Before going to the JY, if you have a parts place you use, check with them. I looked on the WEB at a discount GM part, and it was $104.50 for a universal replacement fan motor. I stopped at my friendly parts shop today, and they had one on hand (not GM). List at $60.00, my price about $33.00. Might be worth going with a new one.
