I may be stupid. Fan Q...

I have a dual fan 88 gta with a 350tpi, th400r. The car kept overheating.. the car's 1st fan would turn on bout 220, like it is supost to. second fan would never turn on. car would heat to 220 in like 10 min, 105 outside. (nor cal) fan would come on.. and car would continue to slowley overheat till 250- when i would turn the car off. and let cool down... i spliced both fan's to the wiring of fan one. both would come on at 220.. car would cool down, switch off and heat back up to 220, and so on.. (oh 180' thermo) worked for couple of weeks. now no fan, i know i probley fried the relay.. two much power drain. should have thought bout that sooner. oh well. my question is.. i would like to make the 1st fan to turn on at 180, and the 2'nd fan to turn on at 200, is their any dis advantage to just wireing in 2 electric fan switches so they can come on whenever i want? will this effect anything else on my car negetivley. also i smog this vehicle, so will this cause any probs? i was planing on hiding all wiring, just my own vanity. thanks for reading.

I'd get a lower temp fan switch. It'll turn primary fan on (185, 190?), then if its still hot and the fan reaches too high, the second fan will kick in and stop it. If it's a smog vehicle, and for some reason you didn't pass for the lower temps (I doubt it), then swap back for inspection, its a five minute job. And no wiring changes. Personally I'd test with an accurate temp gauge before I invested alot of money and start hacking the car.

smog

I have read a ton about this issue, and evreything i have read is that the cooling system is usles in hot climates in our cars, is it worth trying to fix the existing system, or should i try to fix the most apperant probs, the thermostat, and fan setup? or do you think that the existing system will work if i just put in a cooler fan temp switch? also from what i have read my car should pass smog fine as long as it is runing above 160' so it is out of closed loop. 180 seems to be the ideal temp. But rember i live in north cali, and we have 30-40 days in 100' + weather, and same in 30' - days in winter. fan wont run with ac on so it is not going to be easy to get evreything working factory agian. but i would rather do that if it will fix my problems.

i don't live in your climate, but i run a stock system in mine, other than putting in the lower temp fan switch and high-flow water pump. the fan switch kicks on at 200, off at 185. i have a 195 t-stat, as well. the secondary fan is controlled by the ecm, via the cts, i believe. i'm not quite sure at what temp that is supposed to come on, but regardless, it is supposed to come on if you turn the a/c on. that is basically the only time my secondary will come on since my primary works as advertised. i can't really say how much a high-flow pump would help you, but the best thing you can do initially is get rid of that stock fan switch and put in the lower temp one. and disconnect the 2 fans from the same circuit. yes, you can run switches to operate the fans on demand, but if you want to stay with the "original configuration" it's easy to do so. but that's just my opinion and my set-up that works for me.
