Fan & Temp Guage Problem

1989 IROC-Z Z28 305TBI with electric fan (single)

My fan does not turn on at all and the car just goes ahead and overheats. What is the problem? (This is my first car). Also my temperature guage reads like 300*....its sticking straight up. Whats that mean?

Also does anyone know where I can get a flushing system? I found one years ago and it had two bottles, one for your liquid and one for the liquid getting flushed...it was like $150 but I can no longer find it?

P.S. Comments and questions.

I see tons of other people with slightly the same question and yet I STILL HAVE NO ANSWERS? Heard this was the place to go for answers. GUESS NOT. I WOULDNT ASK IF I KNEW HOW MYSELF.

Do you have A/C?

If yes, does the fan come on with the A/C? The fan should ALWAYS run with the A/C on, regardless of the actual engine coolant temp - if the fan runs with A/C on, then the fan is fine - it's the fan switch located on the pass side head - has a single wire going to it - replace it. Caution - there is also a knock sensor on pass side with same connector and a single wire - you'll know the fan switch cause it's the one that all the antifreeze leaks out from - cover face!

If fan doesn't run with A/C on, then it's the fan - replace for $30 at Autozone/Advance.

The gauge - maybe the temp sensor is bad - located on Driver side head just below #1 plug wire - single wire going to it - try replacing it for $10 at Autozone/Advance. If that's not it, then it's the guage - replace guage cluster with another used piece from classifieds here on TGO.

Hope that helps.

And have a little patience - we don't all sit here reading every post all day long - we too have issues and repairs and mods we are out working on ourselves - it takes a few days to a week to get answers here sometimes, cause we are busy on our own rides.

i agree, however with a slight addition. test the relay first. here is what you do. somwhere in the front of the car there are a few relays, one of them is for the fan. this is probably located on the passanger side next to the radiator or on the inside of the fender facing the engine bay. right next to the battery.should have a few wires going to it.
the red/black wire gives power to the fan.
the green/white wire is the wire coming from your fan switch or ECM (don't know how the single fan cars work), when the ECM/switch senses the right temp it grounds the wire and turns on the fan.
the red wire is battery hot
the tan/white wire is hot with ignition on and comes from the 20amp fuse in the fuse box.

TEST ONE:
ground the green/white wire with test lead. does the fan come on?
NO: motor or relay is bad. test the relay further. see test two
YES: the sensor is bad, or there is a broken wire. inspect wiring, if ok replace sensor.

TEST TWO: leave the green/white wire grounded. put a test light on the red/black wire. did the light come on?
YES:if the light comes on the relay is good. replace fan.
NOt: he light does not come on. see test three.

TEST THREE: put a test light on the red wire. with ign on. did it light?
YES. proceed to test four
NO. hell, ok, follow the wire to the distrobution block under the hood. check it's fuse (it has an inline fuse), replace fuse reconnect wire do whatever to get it hot. runa new wire if you have too.

TEST FOUR: put a test light on the tan/white wire. did it light?
NO. replace the "C/H FAN" fuse in the fuse block.
YES. uhmmm.. thats it. if all of these tests are yes and your fan does not work... uhm... sell your car.
