For the life of me, I cant find this switch on my block.My service manual doent show an illustration of the location, only a description of location.
"top rear of passenger side engine" I want to check it for failure.
85 TA 305 tpi.

It's in the head between the exhaust ports on cyl's 6 & 8. You might need a mirror to see it if you have stock exhaust manifolds. Just stick your hand down there and feel around.

I know that the fan switch for other years 305 setups are located between cylinder 6 & 8.... but I was told that for my year car, (1985) the ECM controlls the fan relay turning on and off,and the Redundant switch is a backup for ECM failure. I dont see a "Fan Switch" on the cooling fan wiring diagram either.My 86 has the Fan Switch between 6&8,but that one is a 305 4BBL. (pain in the sack to change too).
I cant get the fan to run even with the AC on.I also have no voltage between A&B in fan relay plug,and I jumpered A&B but still nothing.It is absolutely unbearably cold outside,so I gave up. Im figuring its gotta be the fusable link, temp sensor on the waterneck,or the fan itself.(hopefully the ECM is OK)
Im gonna run the fan direct from the battery first to rule out the fan.
Im finding more and more electrical gremlins in this car as I drive it. Alot of jury rigged stuff from the last dude. All 3 of my cars were the same way.Its very aggrivating to trace back all the bulls*** from other peoples hack jobs.
I am no class A Auto Mechanic,but Im not a complete idiot either.
Any ideas on what Im missing here would be appreciated.

What does not knowing the location of the fan switch have to do with the hack job the previous owner did on your engine's wiring?? I'm sure you're not an idiot, but I'm also sure there was at one time a fan switch in the exact location I described. Whether or not it turns on when it's 20 ****ing degrees outside, that's not my problem. Hot wire the fan motor, watch it turn on, and work backwards from there.

Remember, I didn't **** up your wiring harness, someone else did.

If the fan won't turn on when you bypass the relay it's either the fusible link, fan return wire has a bad ground, break in either of these wires somewhere, or the motor is bad. It's impossible to test anything else (fan switch in head, AC switch, any manual switch installed, or any always-on hotwire) if this system isn't working.

As far as the fan switch, with all the crap on the passenger side of the engine it's pretty much impossible to see it from the top. Get underneath the car, down by the starter and look straight up. If it's there you will see it sticking out like a lone tree in a meadow. This isn't your main problem right now though, figure out first why it wont run when you bypass the relay.

I wasnt insinuating that you werent trying to help me,or that I was questioning your switch location response. Im just not sure what the Redundant switch looks like .I appreciate that you tried to help,but I think you took my reply personally as a wise A** reply.If anything I was trying to explain my problem to you the best I could. And no, you didnt **** up my wiring harness, I was just blowin off steam for being frustrated.

Thanks Darkshot, Im gonna try tracing back wires tomorrow ,and running fan direct.

There is a magic green wire, that when grounded, turns on the fan. It is the one that goes to the redundant fan switch. Find it, key it up, ground the magic green wire, and see what happens. If the fan doesn't come on, you'll have to take it from there. Start at the fan motor, verify it works with 12V, etc etc etc.

The magic green wire in my '84 turns my fan on every time.

He already said that he bypassed the relay and the fan didn't come on. Since all this mystical green wire does is close the relay, we've established that the problem lies elsewhere. Next step is to check the fusible link, fan motor, connections between them, and the fan motor's ground.

First check the fusible link, since its the easiest to check. Like I said it's by the battery (passenger side, little block with two red wires leading into it) on my 91, not sure about the 85. If it's good, then next check the fan motor to make sure it actually runs. If it works, then you will have to start checking continuity of the circuit. Check the first two things, my money is on the fusible link.
