Re: coolant ?

Adding antifreeze to the system will not make it cool better necissarily. All antifreeze does is prevent the coolant from freezing as well as raising the boiling point of the coolant, amongst other things. It does not increase the cooling ability of the fluid.

Sounds like the problem is more in the system itself, rather than the fluid in the system.

Re: coolant ?

What Stekman said is 100% correct. When you get your cooling system repaired, do NOT use dex-cool(GM red coolant). Ethel glycol is still the best. I personally use Prestone brand, but the brand is not critical. Be sure to use yellow ethel glycol.

Re: coolant ?

If you live in an area where the temperature drops to freezing or near freezing you don't want to use strictly water, you need a mix.

I work with all sorts of mechanics everyday and the general consensus is that using GM dexcool in your 3rd gen is absolutely fine. In fact, if you have alot of aluminum components in your engine setup it's in fact better.

If you plan on using dexcool, drain your cooling system completely. DON'T mix it with the older ethel glycol product (creates an internal chemical reaction not good for your engine). The dexcool product is an extended life product, meaning you won't have to replace it like the regular coolant every couple years. Dexcool should be replaced within 5 years.

The Prestone dexcool product is premixed. You'll get a better deal purchasing the concentrated dexcool product at your local GM dealership, but you'll need to mix it with water (generally 50/50).

No need to worry about it degrading your head / intake gaskets.

I've been using it for over 2 years now in my 3rd gen.

Re: coolant ?

As an independent technician that rapairs about 100 vehicles and builds about 20 motors a year; dex-cool is s**t. I never have to be told when a motor has had dex-cool in it. EThel glycol is the best antifreeze. There are other coolants, but some don't have antifreeze propertys.
It is usually best to mix any antifreeze at 50/50. It gives you protection to -34.
