89 Camaro RS Electric fan help

What is the stock cfm and wattage for the fan? mine is wired to always run but in the 110 degree whether with the ac on it still gets to 230 240 within 30 mins.... Is the stock fan good enough? or do i need to buy one with higher cfm'age

Re: 89 Camaro RS Electric fan help

the stock set up gets warm, but i would check the basics first before adding things that could create new problems.

First, i would flush the old coolant. When refilling make sure there are no air pockets. Fill with cap on radiator off while engine is warming up but be careful.

Second, i would determine if the car is getting hot when driving or standing still. If it gets hot when the car is driving, I would make sure the lower air dam is attached and bent in a direction to push the air towards the radiator. In both cases, check to see if there is any debris or objects in front of the radiator interfering with air movement.

Third, I would check to see what kind of thermostat was in the car. Use the factory specifications or one that is slightly cooler.

Fourth, check your hoses to make sure they are not collapsing under load. If they feel soft, replace them. Its always better to take the high road than be stranded.

Fifth, check your temp sensors on both sides of the engine. They are located on the head.

Hope this helps, I have chased cooling problems and fixed mine with these steps.

Re: 89 Camaro RS Electric fan help

Hey POS89, thanks for the advice. I have a similar prob as Regulator. I have a 91 with a stroked 383 carbed small block and I run about 210 to 220 on 70 to 80 degree days while driving. I have not run in temps above 80 yet as this engine is just built and installed. I am afraid of the 90+ degree days we get here in Chicago. She cools down when running/standing still. I gather that the air dam is a crucial part of the cooling. Mine is gone. Sounds like if I replace it I will gain some cooling while moving. All other components are in excellent condition. I have a 160 thermostat. I was going to add a shroud, dual fans or even go to a larger core, but I wonder if that might be over kill. Right now, I have stock fan (on all the time), radiator, water pump. I also added a bottle of Water Wetter. Does that stuff really work?
Thanks
Dave
