Quick thermastat question
Or rather thermOstat.
Ok, I know this sounds stupid, and yes I have used the search tool.
When I bought my car it was overheating and had no thermostat.
I have fixed the overheating problem and since there is no stat the car won't warm up. To solve this I am installing a thermostat (first time). I thought I had it right but it leaks. So:
When installing a thermostat (350) with a gasket (opposed to silicon) (Felpro)
Do you put in the gasket first or the thermostat first?
I put the thermostat on, the the gasket (thats what it looked like in the pictures I could find) but its leaking a lot. Did I just get the order wrong? Also, does anybody know the torque setting on the two bolts?
Thanks in advance

Re: Quick thermastat question
If you don't know only stupid if you don't ask
Should be a slight recess on the intake side, put stat in
first. You can use sealer on both sides of gasket if you
want, I use grease on both sides rubbed in, (No cleanup)
on removing. Anti-sieze on bolts, which is a sealant and
lubricant. Steel bolts don't play well after a while with
aluminum threads. 25-30ft lb and good to go
Last note, check stat housing for corrosion pits and lap
sand on flat plate, I use 300 grit, also flattens possible
warped surface.

Re: Quick thermastat question
This would be a very novice thing but it sounds like that's where we are right now.
Did you clean the thermostat housing and the intake of old gasket material? Won't seal up if you didn't.

Re: Quick thermastat question
I'll try the 300 grit as it sounds like I've got the order right already. I did in fact clean the thermostat housing on both sides. As part of that I removed all of the old gasket. The intake side is only a couple thousand miles old and seems to be in good shape so I don't think it would be warped although who knows what the last guy did.

Re: Quick thermastat question
I made a topic about this not too long ago, its called Thermostat leaking. I actually fixed it. best tip, use the correct size gasket and use black rtv silicon to seal it up nicely. Works great for me.
