overheating 89 IROC

I own an 89 IROC that is a mess for wiring. I am no pro at it, but I can tell you that my electric fan does not work. Therefore I overheat when I am idling in traffic. My A/C is gone and from what I can figure out this is an issue when it comes to my electric fan. how can I fix this. I am no pro on wiring, but I am willing to try anything if it is explained to me in novice terminology. LOL. Relay is good, I am even open to a toggle, but I have no clue on how to do that. Any suggestions????????????

Re: overheating 89 IROC

I went down to the local auto parts store and bought a kit that has a probe that you push through the Rad fins close to the tank, wire it up and when the Rad gets hot the probe tells the fan to turn on, it only cost like $25 or 30 bucks very easy to install, and no worries about relays and all the other stuff. the Kit come complete with relay and wiring and instructions...very easy to install...

edit wanted to add
I think mine comes on at 190 and off at 160??? something like that.

Re: overheating 89 IROC

How do you know the relays are good? Do you have a single or dual fan setup? Did the fan(s) ever work or is this problem new?

When I got my '89 some jerkoff had taken the stock dual system out and put in a single that was all busted up. I replaced it with a SPAL dual setup. That thing will suck the legs of your pants off!

Re: overheating 89 IROC

I have a dual setup. I replaced the relay so I know its good. it never did work and I never cared since I dont' live in a big city, so I don't sit in traffic normally. However my wife likes to drive the car also so it all just needs to work if you know what I mean, especially since I have headers with header wrap and a heatshield on the starter, but on a hot day the car needs to sit for 15 min or so in order to restart. So then that gives me a situation when I fuel up lets say, or go through a drive through.

Re: overheating 89 IROC

If it never worked and you can be sure the relay works, I'd probably start looking at the fan setup itself. Have you ever tested the fans?
