Re: cooling fan

There should be a fan switch located between #6 and #8 on the passenger side head. If you still have the OE exhaust manifolds, it'll be hard to see from the top side. If my memory is correct, there's a single green and white wire from the loom going to it. You may have to check from underneath the car to make sure or wait until it's cool before trying to locate it with your hand.

Is your fan working at all? You can perform a simple test with jumpers to the battery. If the fan works when jumpered, and the fan switch is in place and wired, check to make sure your getting battery to the fan. If not, you may have a bad fuse link.

Keep after it... good luck

Re: cooling fan

I´ve been trying to locate that switch myself with no luck. Mine is also an 86 Trans Am 305 Tpi. Is there anyone who has a picture or something of the switch in place or maybe blueprints of the cooling system?

Re: cooling fan

I have an 86 T/A with the 305 TPI. The coolant temp sender is located in the front of the intake manifold just above the water pump. The sender with the green wire on the driver's side head is for the gauge. The passenger side head has a block-off plug in it. It is a good location for an aftermarket sender, but can be tricky to remove. Be careful with the wiring, as the coolant temp senders on the 86 TPI's with California emissions are not on/off switches, they vary the voltage to the ECM depending on the tempature of the engine. It is best not to modify the factory system, but to wire up a separate aftermarket temp sender, and relay from Jegs or Summit.

Re: cooling fan

i figured that this might help. get under the car by the starter... then you will see the knock sensor. the fan switch should be higher up than that. i do not have one on my car but it did have a plug screw with an inset box head. i didnt have the tools to take it out so i just found the green/white wire that wadebryant was talking about... mine was hanging by the starter. i just ran a wire into the cab to a toogle switch then the second wire from the toogle to a ground. my car has a 180 stat and it doesn't run over 195 on the hottest days. i live in florida
