Never gets up to temp? 1991 Firebird 305 TBI

Hey guys, with my old car I had an overheating problem, could never get it to run good so when I bought this one I thought for sure I'd have to upgrade the cooling system until I got to drive it.. It sticks around 40* C. It only goes up to around 100* C when I'm sitting in traffic for a long period of time..

Could it be a combination of a high flow water pump (Previous owner probably put one on), my air dam I got from a 91 Firebird at the Junkyard, and unusually cold air for June?

Could possibly be missing the t-stat or it might be stuck open.

I changed that already, but the one that was in there was fine.. I thought it could be a high flow pump with more pressure that's pushing the t-stat open.. Or it could be like my Voltmeter on the dash and just be completely wrong.

What temp stat did you install? Are your fans running constantly by chance?

It's possible that the high volume pump might be keeping an average t-stat open, just enough. Might swap in a stat designed just for the high vol. water pump and see if that changes the temp gauge reading..

I've read of others poking a small releif hole or two into the outer edge of the t-stat with the idea that it serves two purposes, allows a small amount of coolant to flow past and also allows the t-stat to open later after the cooling system comes up to temp but, I've not tried that so cant suggest it.

One last question, is warm coolant flowing through the lower radiator hose?

The second reason is that you don't get air pockets in the heads causing uneven hot spots, mainly if you use a prom(chip) and a 160 degree stat. Personally I always drill an 1/8 hole in the rim as a steam release(from above stated reasons).

I used a prestone fail safe T-stat, the fans aren't running all the time.

I'm running a 190* F T-stat, its standard as far as I know.
