Are the side GFX necessary for cooling?

Okay, my car has the 3 piece air dam and I have always known that the passenger side piece was missing. A few days ago I started taking my car apart to get it ready to prep for paint, when I removed the front side GFX I could see why the air dam piece was missing, the holes were stripped out and some of the "tabs" were broken. Every other GFX piece I have seen for sale is also damaged.

I know the center air dam piece is necessary for deflecting air through the radiator, but do these side pieces serve a purpose? Can I leave them off?
