AC Questions
OK here goes. I have a 92, and the PO said the heater hasn't worked since he bought it(no problem its always in the 80's here), and the AC stopped working a year ago. When I turn the on/off switch you can hear the engine change pitch and some noise from the dash like a hissing. But nothing else happens. No air comes out of the vent and the clutch doesn't switch on. I took it to an "AC guy" and he said it could be "anything". But he wold start with the blower or a seal leak on the compressor. My problem is that its 80 bucks to start looking at it and that does not guarantee finding the problem. I was also told it could run up into 1000's of dollars if the clutch is gone,etc, etc. basically if I have to replace everything. The chiltons doesn't tell much about ac, could someone help me and tell me where to start, or what to do. Thanks in advance.

OK, I cleaned up the engine bay real well, and played with the compressor. I was able to get the compressor to turn on. It cycles approximately every 5 sec's. Still no air out of the vents.

The hissing you hear is vacuum which is used to configure blend doors.
For the $80 diagnostic fee he should have been able to give you a fairly detailed printout of the problem.
Anyway, apply 12 volts directly to the blower motor under the hood to see if it turns on.
If it doesn’t, replace the blower motor.
If it does, report back, we will continue diagnosis.

Thanks for the reply. This is the first time I messed with AC so: Is there more than one spot to test at? Would it be better to remove the motor and test it? If I do have to remove the motor, what is the gasket? Is it an actual gasket or just a sealant? Thanks

I SEE AC
You don’t have to remove the motor to test it.
Just apply 12 volts to the power input at the motor located on the right side of the firewall.
If it’s good you’ll hear it.
