Which sensors?

I have done some searching but have not found anything to directly answer my question. I have an 89 with the 2.8. My engine runs at normal operating temps most of the time I did notice that a couple of times my temp gauge went up past 220 and the fans did not kick on. I made sure I shut it off before it got too hot each time but I want to avoid this ever happening again. So my question is this:
How many sensors/ relays does my car have regarding temperature/cooling and what are they called?

My plan is to replace every relay and sensor that is related to cooling. I also plan to remove my radiator and have it boiled out and cleaned.

Hot Tip

Check the FAN fuse in the fuseblock in the left area of the footwell.

If the fuse is OK apply 12 volts directly to the fan.

Did it run?

If yes ground the Coolant Temper Sensor located wire located at the top left front of the engine, sort of behind the AC compressor.

Did the fan run?

Re: Which sensors?

I HAVE THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM.
(I will look into the above solution when I get home and post results, maybe even a vid)

My fan never turns on, EVER. My car go's past 220 every time I drive it. I don't know what relay or sensors to check. I'm not the best with this type of thing. Any other suggestions?

Re: Hot Tip

My fan kicks on almost always but a couple of times it didnt. I know there is a sensor on the side of the block, a coolant temp sensor and a relay for your fan. I am just going to check the above from NINA, and then slowly replace them all. They are over 20 years old so I will just replace them.
