problems with fan goes on then off

Had problems with over heating found temp sensor not functioning grounded out wire at temp sensor fan started to turn slowly but not up to speed.
Started car then fan did go up to speed worked for about 5 mins then stopped changed out relay fan started again very slowly then stopped
Tried out fan direct to battery and worked great any recommendations as to what it could be.

Took relay off jumpered the hot(orange wire) to fan(black with red wire) at relay connector and it came on full
noticed connector had some arcing residue cleaned off the residue and plugged relay back on turned car on and fan now functioning at full speed.
