86 WS6 overheating

Hey all,

Just throwing the T/A back together and i have a small issue .. When i got the car, it ran like a top, but i noticed the fan never kicked on no matter how hot it got, i was thinking of just ditching the electric fan and throwing a clutch on it, but if i run 12 volts directly to the fan and cross over the acc the fan kicks on and runs fine..

Not sure if maybe its a relay, or something in that matter. Theres two temp sensors within the thermostat housing, one looks to be for the gauge which isnt hooked up, but the one looking like its going to an ECU etc was replaced.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There's a switch ontop of the block that i believe has a yellow and black wire going into it. That could be you're problem..

Re: 86 WS6 overheating

The one on the manifold is for the gauge, the fan temp sensor is on the block between #6 & #8 cylinders, right below the head. The sensor is on the ground side of the fan relay, so if it goes out, the relay wont ground, or will have a constant ground making the fan run all the time. With the AC on, it should override the temp sensor and kick the fan on no matter what. So it sounds like the relay could be bad. You can always swap it with the fuel pump relay and see if its bad.

The fan does kick on with the A/C on. Thanks so much for the advice bud, i'll look over the harness and see if i can find the problem.

Re: 86 WS6 overheating

So tell me this isnt halarious,

I decided to renovate all of the wiring under the hood with new tape etc today, and i found that the wire going to that sensor in the block was snipped; so i went ahead and re-wired it in the process. The engine wont be ready to run for another week or two, waiting on another paycheck for some final parts.. then we'll see what happens!
