fan not working....boiling anti freeze.
ok this has been going for a few months now. the car will over heat while even at an idle and while im driving i have to floor it to get it to cool down. the fan has stopped working for a couple months now. i didnt even no about it until today when i was replacing my distributor. so i am going to list everything that i no about it and hopefully we can fix this without breaking the bank. it is a 89 camaro 5L 305 tbi with an electric fan.
car is over heating almost everytime i drive it now. sometimes it will remain cool with new antifreeze in it but when it over heats it all comes out of the overflow tank steaming the whole time. the anti freeze never contains oil or comes out foamy just comes out.
when the fan was running (back in the day lol) the engine would cool off right away. keep in mind that i didnt even no that there was a switch for the fan until about a month after i had it. ( i never had anything older than a 2001 before this car but ive been wanting this car for as long as i can remember). once i figured out that and i turned it on it dropped the temp a 100 degrees in a matter of minuets.
the reasoning i am going so in depth with this is because i was told that it might be the head gaskets but since i found out the fan isnt even turning on i am starting to think and really really hoping that this isnt true.
i have traced the 2 main wires from the fan itself and found that the main (black with red stripe) is going to a relay looking thing right on the other side of the dash under the hood. when i found that i started messing with the switch and could hear a ticking noise everytime i would turn it on or off.
i am not sure if this is the way it is suppose to sound.
so i need to no 1. why the fan isnt working and what i have to do to get it working. 2. if it is normal for the engine to get so hot so fast without the fan working. 3. someone give me some peace of mind and tell me my heads are and its just the stupid fan lol. thank you in advance to all who participate in helping me fix my beast

Disconnect it and apply 12V to the terminals and see if it spins.
