my brother just bought an 84 iroc with the 305 H.O carb. had an electric fan on it he was driving it today and the car started to over heat i looked at it, it has an electric fan but some idiot cut the power wire to the fan and ran it to the distributor for some reason. well that wire is now fried and the fan dont work. i tryed to run the power wire straight to the battery just to see if it would turn on when i touched the batt with the wire it started sparking like the 4th of july? the fan worked when he bought the car but the motor was going out on it cuz occasionally it would make a loud screaching noise. i guess the car origanlly came with an electric fan but i assumed being an 84 it should of had a clutch fan on it instead but now i think im wrong i put a clutch fan on anyway for now to help with the over heating problems. would it be better to put a new electric fan in? and why would the wire spark so bad when i tried to put power to the fan?

 

If you have room for the clutch and fan their is no problem doing so. Mileage will go down some from electric. But other then that their isn't really a down side. Power will also go down a bit.

 

ya makes since power would go down a bit same wit gas. if it came with electric fan eventually i wanna put that back in. just gunna be a pain in the but to get the wiring figured out, because for some reason the prevous owner cut the power wire of the fan and wired it to the distributor. my guess is the relay went bad and the guy didnt notice but i still dont kno why he'd wire it to the distributor....but if all else fails ill just throw an electric fan in and wire it from the battery to a switch. Just buy a seperate fan controller - they don't use the factory fan wiring at all. From $35 - $100 depending on bells and whistles. They probe the radiator fins for temps, some adjustable, some with manual switch options - all include their own wiring and instructions - takes about 1/2 hour to set one up. Any auto parts store has lower end/priced ones on the shelf, I run a Flex-a-lite I got at Summit - best $100 I ever spent!
