Question and Concerns..

Alright, I have a 1987. Camaro 2.8ltr 5spd(in case you wanted to know)
and I'm obviously having an overheating situation.

Started off a few months ago when the camaro started to overheat and the light came on indicating that it was overheating.
I've replaced the thermostat(190) and had an aftermarket temp gauge put in. For reasons why I put the temp guage in was because I needed to know how much the temp is going in case I overheat again. And in order to get the temp guage installed I had to take out the coolant temp sender(edited)
Which is wired up to the fan(Right?) I know that the fan ain't turning but here's a question, if it is possible to re-wire the fan so it turns on when the engine turns on, will it cause any problems?

So now as of today, my car overheated and I don't know what seems to be the problem. It's every time I start up the vehicle while its warm the temperature jumps up usually to 210-230. I'm debating whether this is normal or not.(which probably isn't). So now I have to Max the heater out so it can stay at 190..

*Also, I'm getting my radiator replaced since that is super corroded.

Could there be any other possibilities before I replace any more things?

For now what should I do?
P.s. Sorry if I wasn't so clear on some things, just let me know if you need some clarification.

Thanks!

Re: Question and Concerns..

well, you can wire up the fan to the battery positive terminal and then ground the other wire. Just make sure you put an inline fuse probably a 25 or 30 amp, and then you can wire in a toggle switch so that you can just switch your fan on when you want it. OR, you could wire it into the hot wire for the distributor... thats only on when the car is running, and then just ground the other wire, also with an inline fuse...DONT forget that part.

So for now, until you get that new radiator (which will be a big help!) get that fan wired up!!!! Cause w/o that fan your coolant is not cooling off properly.

Re: Question and Concerns..

The coolant temp sensor (CTS) is in the intake, by the thermostat housing. This was NOT what you needed to replace to install your temp gauge. What you needed to replace was the coolant temp SENDER, which should be in the driver side head. You need the CTS to run the fans, and so your computer knows how hot the car is and adjusts timing/fuel accordingly.

The sender is the single green wire correct? Sorry, my mistake of saying it incorrectly and getting them mixed. I did install the coolant temp gauge where the Sender was.
But I do need a new sensor too.. when i look at it now it looks like it's.. well.. super old.

Re: Question and Concerns..

If you're going to wire it to be on any time the key is turned on, DON'T do it the way post#2 describes. Do a search on this board for methods using a relay or grounding out the right wire on your already existing fan relay to make it work without creating a hazard for yourself
