Do I need a fan clutch?

Ok, I am not currently running a fan clutch on my 86' T/A (upgraded to a mech. fan due to the electric fan failing). Is there some purpose to having a fan clutch?

a fan clutch will greatly reduce high-rpm horsepower draw VS a fan
directly driven off the waterpump hub.
