Fan problems

I have a 1991 Trans Am 305 tpi and recently the radiator fan has stopped coming on. I have tried to fix the problem myself, but have not had much luck. The wiring was all redone and a fan switch installed by the previous owner so I can't just look into a book to figure out how to fix it. The driver side is the only one that was coming on, the passenger side fan hasn't kicked in since i got it. So i was hoping someone had a guide to install my own fan switch so i can do it from scratch and not have to worry about if the last guy didn't ground something right or something. Also what would be the possibility that the fan motor just burnt out? If there was a way to check if the motor is even operational. Open to all suggestions and criticism.
