Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

...I made this in hopes of improving the cooling system. Ive been reading that a shroud should be used, but our electric fan/s don't have one & not really interested in converting to dual fans, so I made this. Those of you who know. What do you think it will do? A lot, a little, nothing at all? I don't have any real world use yet, as the car is in transition. Stock 17" fan, champion rad, never ran hot before.

Minimal gaps.

Looks nice however you do need to little space between the shroud and the radiator to allow air flow into the shroud.

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

There's at least 1" on the outer side, to almost 2" at the fan.Thats probably at the minimum for airflow, i think.

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

nice job on that shroud-has to improve airflow at idle/low speed-but could possibly restrict radiator airflow at high speeds as a "windmilling" fan restricts airflow and the factory may have left the sides open to "spill" air at high speed.IIRC,the '84 'vette, with the exact same fan,has a shroud almost completely enclosed except the lower corners of the radiator-so might not be a problem.

I was thinking the same thing while cutting these.Ill have to wait & see how it performs.I can always cut a few slots in it if it restricts airflow at speed.Ill have to find a pic of the vette set-up.

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

very nice. Do you have cad drawings for this or did you make it as you went? Very professional looking with the bends and all.

If anything you could holesaw a couple of holes on each side and rivet a rubber flap over them like many of the aftermarket and OEM shrouds use

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

Thanks T_T. My drawings consist of cardboard & sharpie, template. Then transfer to sheet metal. Eyeballed & hand bent mostly. The vette piece looks pretty involved, but i like your rubber flap idea.

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

Great work on the shroud. Seeing your work, makes me want to go back to single fan.

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

So I decided to put some vents on the shroud. They are spring loaded, so they close when not in motion.I also upgraded to a Spal fan (#30102049).

I mounted the spal fan by cutting out the center of the OE fan mount. I used six small bolts/nut to hold the spal fan in place .You can see two of the nuts/bolts here.

Mounts same as stock, slightly roomier w/ 2050 cfm to boot.

Re: Homebuilt Single Fan Shroud...

Yes, definately. Most helpful when the car is stopped, not as much while at speed, but that what shrouds are meant for anyway.I cant complain though.
