Intake coolant ports

I've searched everywhere and can't find a answer. Are the screw in intake coolant ports on the intake manifold and water pump needed or can I block them off? I don't have heater core hooked up. I'm 90% sure they are just used for heater core but just wanted to be sure they don't help with cooling engine.

Re: Intake coolant ports

If no heater, then you are good to go by just plugging them with pipe plugs.
