85 iroc

so if I could get an answer from anybody about this it would be great. so here is the story sorry if its long or boring or whatever. I have an 85 Camaro iroc original engine was a 305 tpi but because the engine went bad from the guy I bought it from he pulled this engine and replaced it with a 350 he told me its bored out and the heads shaved. ok he said it was a 76 350 but the numbers on the block suggest it is a 79 350 but whatever. so I am trying to go back to he factory gauges just because it looks better than these other he had hanging from the dash. everything works except the temp gauge. everytime you start the car and it warms up the gauge pegs out quick. so I figured out that the temp sensor actually sent a signal to the ecm. well don't have the ecm anymore lucky to have even part of the original wiring harness in the car. so im thinking the gauge might be bad but a post of a pick somebody had on here showed a sensor on the side of the block towards the front. I have that same thing on mine so should I use that instead of the other which is on top of the intake manifold and go with the one on the side of the block or what. I have a chiltons manual which shows a one wire config. so im kinda lost and I apologize for this being so long of a question. thanks for any help any body gives me.

It does.
The gauge sending unit (not a sensor) for the mass of all sbc motors, is in the drivers side head between #1 & 3 exhaust ports. Get a new sender for your car, instal sender and connect the gauge wire (single green wire) to it. If the gauge pegs hot during crank (gauge sweep test), the gauge is at least working.
