87 Firebird over heating

Hey guys, this is my first post on this forum. I’ve searched around, looking at the possible reasons my car keeps over heating and I’m still lost. I have a 87 firebird formula with a tpi 305, the car is pretty rough, the guy I bought it from didn’t really take care of it. Anyways the car has two electric fans and the one on the drivers side will not kick on, I replaced the motor on it because a shop said it was bad. Neither turn on when I turn on the AC, but the passenger side fan turns on when the coolant starts running too hot, like boiling hot. I’m not familiar with these cars and really am just trying to figure out where to start.

Hey never mind folks, found out I was looking at the wrong relays, and it was the one up by the radiator, that was the issue.

one fan is enough to cool under most circumstances-probably have blocked coolant circulation, does upper radiator get hot?

Re: 87 Firebird over heating

Yes one fan is usually enough but the secondary fan set at factory settings is way to high and overheating by the time it kicks on. Glad you found the problem. Why did the factory want these engine so hot?

For emissions, they run hot.
