Computer Chips: eBay versus the Big Boys

Computer Chips: eBay versus the Big Boys

Question 1:
Are the "home grown" computer chips for performance enhancements okay to use? OR should I just play it safe and stick with an established manufacturer and pay the higher prices? I have seen quite a few on eBay at attractive prices, but I am afraid that i will get what I pay for......very little!
Question 2:
Are these chips easy to install? Where do they go exactly?
Question 3:
Are these chips even worth my time and money, ie, do they REALLY work??
