Hi all, I did a search with several theads and could not come up with an answer. So I will ask here. I have a laptop with TunerproRT and the hook up (as far as I can tell it only hooks to ground and the 8192 port in the ALDL as well as a lead to plug into the cig.lighter) Heres a plain and hopefully simple question. How do you start?
I don't want to do anything wrong and FRY my ECM.
(Do I start the car then hook up the leads and then start the program, or do the leads go on first, then car, then pc???)
Any help would be appreciated. THX

What I would do is to connect the ALDL to the car and the laptop, fire up TurnerProRT and set that up (comm port, ready for logging, file to log to. . .). Then turn the key to the run position (no need to start the car) and try to get it to connect.

Once you can connect and verify sensor readings, opening a log file, then start the engine and go from there.

thanks for the info. I followed the instructions and it recognizes the cable hook up, but I get the message, ECM not responding. That is with the key ON, engine OFF.

How do you know if the ECM is bad?

Just to double check you are connecting the the A & M terminals on the ALDL connector (the M being right below the A terminal)? This is the '91 car?

May also want to do a search on the diy_prom board. Lots of info there on ALDL connecting.

Oh, do the key-on, engine-off short A & B together and see if the ECM blicks codes (should get code 12). Also, at key-on, engine-off, does the SES light come on, blink off, then come on solid?

If both of these tests work the odds are the ECM is operational. Can then try a commercial scan tool from someplace (autozone is known to scan for free) and see if it connects. Then you'll know for sure about the ECM.
