checking codes on laptop?

This is a real newbie question about ECMs. I have read through all sorts of tuning posts and so forth on the DIY PROM board, and I don't know if this is a silly question, but I was looking for a software that I can run on my laptop that will work like a mechanic's scantool. One that will actually give you the codes if the computer's SES light is on. I'm not quite to the point of wanting to tune the car, as I want to make sure that all my sensor's are functioning properly. I understand that you need to buy an ALDL cable to make the connection between the ECM and the laptop, but what software to download is what I'm looking for.

Tunerpro does ALDL logging and will tell you what the sensors aer reading, as well as any codes that might be thrown. Buy or make a cable, get the right Datastream Definition file for your ECM and go to town.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if tunerpro would pull codes for me.
