how to make my unreliable willem universal programmer reliable

I bought a Standard Willem Universal Programmer from ebay a year ago. I didn’t spend the money to buy a better BURN1 or even the Enhanced version, so now I don’t get quality burns. This thing only works about 10% the rest of the time in ends in write errors. I’ve never successfully erased a chip just always burned over them. I am using at29c256 chips, willem eprom 0.97ja software, and power supply is 12v DC (from my old scanner cable). The computer I try to program from is a Compaq Presario 1622 (233mhz, 128mb ram, win98). If anyone could give me some pointers to get this thing working right, I’d be very grateful. I’d also start burning chips again and then get back on track for the cam swap.

I liked to never learned how to program with my willem.
Finally, I went in and set the eprom type from the top menu, and noticed the on screen setting for dip switches that appeared. I then set the dips the way the screen showed, and reset everything for the heck of it, and the damn thing worked!
Try that.

The Green line is a jumper (I used a peice of solder)(or a small wire).

I have the dip switches set as the program shows. I have used one of the trash bag ties with the ends cleaned as jumper. Perhaps I need a better jumper?
What source of power do you guys use?
How successful are your willem programmers?

I used the printer port cable that came with unit. I'm using it on a pc, so I have printer port.
It took forever to learn to use. Their instructions suck!
I ordered some extra eproms, and just kept erasing and programming and changing things till I finally hit on it.
If I had it to do over, I'd have bought the real thing.
I had Craig's programmer, but it does not do the oem type proms.
