wb 02 tuning question

after using the moates ostrich, APU1 and willem programmer, i found that the narrow band 02 sensor is a piece of junk tuning wise. I would like to upgrade to using a wideband, but am put off by the $300+ cost. Cant i just get a heated unit and stick it a foot or two into the tailpipe like on a stick or somthing? I have a very sensitive analog voltmeter with a playback function, and tunerpro supposedly can connect to the wideband directly for datalogging purposes with some cables. Has anyone dont this? I searched, and found out a lot about how 02 sensors work with the megasquirt system, but even searching google the talk seems to revolve around spending hundreds on diy kits and such. After spending 500$ so far, i really would like to get out of this one on the low low and a heated wb sensor is like 80 bucks.

sorry if this is the wrong category i'm new to tuning

The WB sensor really needs a controller. Both the sensor heater and cells need some electronics to run them. No way around this.

About the cheapest way I've heard of is to go to Moates and purchase an Innovate LC-1. Last I looked they were about $160 (a while ago). There is an article in the Moates files about how to hook it up to TunerPro. You will also need the extra cable from Moates (about $15).

Good luck.

LC-1 was $199 a couple months ago when I got one. Still the best option I think considering you have the volt meter w/playback.

I am running an Innovate LC-1 with a Megasquirt ECM, much better set up than a NB O2 sensor. It is a nice unit that is also the least expensive I could find. Got it on EBAY for about $170. Any O2 sensor should be mounted as close to the heads as possible.

I've got the LC-1 installed and wired into the Moates AutoProm so that I can log AFR with the rest of the data. I wrote up the procedure and sent it to Moates to include in his documentation section. TunerPro will also be including it in their documentation some day. I did notice that Moates already has some documentation about connecting the LM-1 and that may work for you. If not, lmk and I'll send you what I wrote.
