How to get REAL rpm readings?

I looked at a couple of meters (Actron Cp7677 and Equus 3440) and they pretty reasonably priced. The only problem is how to hook them up to get a rpm reading. I downloaded the pdf manuals for both, but they are'nt that good. The pic shows a coil other than whats on a Camaro. I got a 1991 RS 3.1 V6 and does anyone know where to hook up test leads on my engine to get an rpm reading? I want to see if the gauge is off from the actual.

you can pull an RPM signal off of a pin on the ICM. Also, the dash cluster pulls a signal off of the right side of the coil (gray plug) with what I believe is a whit wire.
